Advise from Brain surgeon Dr Charlie Teo
* Surgeon warns of electromagnetic radiation
* Takes 'prevention better than cure' approach
* Global study: Mobile cancer link
* Mobiles: How much radiation is there?
BRAIN cancer surgeon Charlie Teo has urged people to put mobile phones on loudspeaker, move clock radios to the foot of the bed and wait until microwaves have finished beeping before opening them.
The controversial Sydney specialist told a Melbourne fundraiser that although the jury was still out on mobile phones and other forms of electromagnetic radiation, we should not take risks.
"Even though the jury's not in, just to err on the side of safety I would try and limit the amount of electromagnetic radiation that you're exposed to," he said.
"The American government, for example, recommend that all electrical appliances should be put at the foot of the bed and not the head of the bed.
"Electric blankets should be turned off before you get in bed and definitely wait for those five beeps before you open the microwave.
"With the mobile phone I encourage you to put it on loudspeaker and step outside rather than sticking it up to your brain."
Dr Teo, who tackles tumours other surgeons deem inoperable, said some hair dyes, particularly red, could also cause brain cancer in people with a predisposition.
"The body needs some genetic predisposition. The hair dye, the mobile phone, they're just catalysts but you probably need some sort of genetic aberration to get the cancer in the first place," he said.
Fast cancers
Dr Teo, who stars in Channel Seven's Last Chance Surgery, was in Melbourne last week for the Blackwood8 fundraiser at Croydon golf club.
The group was founded by family and friends of Sally White, a patient of Dr Teo's whose outlook has improved dramatically.
Dr Teo said while breast cancer doubled its cell numbers in weeks or months, the quickest brain cancers took just 16 hours.
No age group was immune and the incidence of brain tumours was growing.
"It's increasing in frequency both in this country and developing countries and it used to be ranked out of the top 10 but it's just joined the top 10 most common cancers," he said.
Recent studies have raised alarm bells about mobile phones.
An unreleased World Health Organisation study reportedly found "a significantly increased risk" of some brain tumours related to use of mobile phones for 10 years or more.
A Suleyman Demirel University study in Turkey also found wearing a mobile phone on your belt may lead to decreased bone density in an area of the pelvis commonly used for bone grafts.
Dr Teo said there had been some advancements in treating tumours, like microwave therapy and putting chemotherapy directly into a tumour. A healthy diet, meditation and positive thought could also be beneficial.
"We believe that they probably boost the immune system," he said.
Dr Teo's tips to reduce brain tumour risks
- Get eight hours sleep a night and eat well to boost your immune system
- Keep electrical appliances like clock radios at the foot of the bed
- Turn electric blankets off before retiring
- Put mobile phones on hands-free
- Wait until the microwave finishes beeping before opening it

Jokes
1.While playing in the backyard, Little Johnny kills a honeybee. His father sees him killing the honeybee and angrily says, "No honey for you for one month!"Later that afternoon, Johnny's dad catches him tearing the wings off a butterfly. "That's it! No butter for you for one month!" says his dad.Later that evening as Johnny's mother cooks dinner, a cockroach run across the kitchen floor. She jumps and stomps on it, and then looks up to find Little Johnny and her husband watching her.Little Johnny looks at his father and says, "Are you going to tell her, Dad, or do you want me to?"
2.Little Johnny asks his mother her age.
She replies, "Gentlemen don't ask ladies that question."
Johnny then asks his mother how much she weighs.
Again his mother replies, "Gentlemen don't ask ladies that question."
The boy then asks, "Why did Daddy leave you?"
To this, the mother says, "You shouldn't ask that," and sends him to his room.On the way, Johnny trips over his mother's purse.
When he picks it up, her driver's license falls out.Johnny runs back into the room. "I know all about you now. You are 36 years old, weigh 127 pounds and Daddy left you because you got an 'F' in sex!"
3.A Sunday school teacher is concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus, so he asks his class, "Where is Jesus today?"Steven raises his hand and says, "He's in Heaven."Mary answers, "He's in my heart."Little Johnny waves his hand furiously and blurts out, "He's in our bathroom!"The surprised teacher asks Little Johnny how he knows this."Well," Little Johnny says, "every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door and yells 'Jesus Christ, are you still in there?!'"
4.A salesman rings the door bell and Little Johnny answers.
Salesman: "Can I see your dad?"
Johnny: "No, he's in the shower."
Salesman: "What about your mother? Can I see her?"
Johnny: "Nope. She's in the shower, too."
Salesman: "Do you think they'll be out soon?"
Johnny: "Doubt it. When my dad asked me for the Vaseline, I gave him super glue instead."
5.One day, Little Johnny's class was reviewing the alphabet. His teacher knew that he had an ''advanced'' vocabulary for his age, so she was trying to avoid calling on him. When the teacher asked for a word beginning with "A", Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher knew he would say "ass" so she called on Mary Lou, who said ''apple".
This continued through most of the alphabet, because his teacher knew that there was a cuss word that Johnny would say for every letter of the alphabet. Then she got to ''R''. She thought for a moment, but couldn't think of any cuss words that began with R, so she called on Johnny.
''R is for rats - big FUCKING rats, with twelve-inch cocks!''

Jokes
'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.'
'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'
A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'
Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two
groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its
recommendation.
The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because:
1.. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2 The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself
spending half your paycheck on accessories for
it.
(THIS GETS BETTER!)
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model..
The women won.
Send this to all the smart women you know...and all the men that have a sense of humor.
City A1
Sitiawan forges ahead into the future
By Sheridan Mahavera
SITIAWAN, April 5 — It really is hard to imagine that Perak’s most booming town was once just a handful of pre-war wooden shops huddled together at a four-way junction.
That is how Stephen Francis Fernandez recalls Sitiawan, back in the early 80s when he just moved here from Parit Buntar.
The way he describes the town centre, it is as if the man-made structures banded together at this crossroad, between Lumut to the west and Ipoh to the east, against the miles upon miles of dark oil plantations that carpeted this part of Perak.
“Now look at it,” he waves his arm around at the estates of houses and shops that stretch out in all directions from Simpang Empat — the ancient nexus that’s now just another traffic-light junction among many other junctions.
That in itself is testament to the town’s growth from remote settlement to near centre-of-the-state status. There are now junctions and bypass roads going to Teluk Intan and on to Selangor and Kuala Lumpur in the south and another one going north to Pantai Remis and Penang.
It may not have a swanky mall yet but Sitiawan has a four-screen cineplex, a Giant grocery store and a Tesco that’s coming up down the road from it. Of the 18 banks and financial institutions, there are exotic foreign ones such as the Royal Bank of Scotland.
The rubber and oil palm trees that used to line Jalan Lumut, which bisects the town, have been replaced by shops that sell high-end car stereos, slimming treatments and imported furniture.
The wooden Chinese village house is a fast-disappearing exception to the brick and mortar terrace lots of Taman Samudera and Desa Manjung Raya or the “Venice of Perak”.
It is a town where the old Chinaman stereotypes still exist: that of the grizzled old “uncle” in faded shorts or the weather beaten “auntie”, with pockets of hard cash.
Yet Sitiawan is a monument to those ancient archetypes. It was they who cut out a patch of land to call home from the unforgiving wilderness on the banks of Sungai Sitiawan more than 100 years ago and who continue to fuel Sitiawan’s growth.
No play, all work
Sitiawan’s success is often traced to the incredible Foo Chow work ethic and how they are supposedly a “different breed of Chinese”. It sounds like communal preening, as if something special ran in their blood but the reason may be more environmental than genetic.
It started in 1903, when boats loaded with over 360 Chinese from eastern Fujian in China landed on the banks of Sungai Sitiawan/ Sungai Dinding to carve out a new settlement.
According to information at the Sitiawan Settlement Museum, these Foo Chows were Methodist Christians led by three pastors. They had left their homes for this remote part of Perak in the hopes of finding a better future.
The heart of the settlement was the old Methodist Pioneer church (which now houses the museum) whose clergy and missionaries provided welfare, education and leadership.
The museum’s guide says that no one was allocated a specific plot of land so the size of a settler’s land was basically determined by “how much jungle he can clear”.
This freedom for each settler to gain as much property was instrumental in creating Sitiawan’s nascent economy that in turn fuelled the boom that it sees now. The settlers planted cash crops such as rubber and oil palm in 100- to 200-acre plots.
Long-time resident and property developer Sam Tuck Wah explains that these holdings were passed on from generation to generation and is an important source of disposable income which is then funnelled into education or invested.
The community’s Christian roots also helped instil a certain moral discipline in the pioneers which they then passed on.
“They work long hours and there is no time for nonsense,” Sam, executive director of DKLS Industries Berhad says.
What he means is that in Sitiawan, there is no official entertainment district. There are bars but they are lonely outposts of dim neon lights filled with sad-looking men in the back alleys of the new shop lots.
Carousing, says Sam, is extremely frowned upon by the pious community.
“This is a place where you can concentrate,” he says, either as a student on her studies or as a businessman, planter or amateur investor on making money.
Surrounded by money
By local estimates, Sitiawan’s transformation was a gradual, steady climb that took place over the past 20 years. It was greatly helped by several important mega projects: the Lumut Royal Malaysian Navy base, the JanaManjung and Segari power plants and the Lumut Port.
The town is also at the centre of one of Malaysia’s most thriving prawn farming areas. It is also the first and one of the more successful regions for harvesting swiflet nests.
Praise must also be given to the Manjung district council, says Lumut MP Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, as the authority worked to ensure the area’s infrastructure is first-class.
In fact it would not be wrong to say that property developers like DKLS Berhad depend on the hundreds of local and foreign professionals brought in by the port’s heavy industries and the two power plants.
High-end homes are also being snapped up by Sitiawan’s many successful farmers and planters.
The port handles mostly bulk cargo and what is termed the “dirty stuff” such as coal, sulphur and clinkers. The air at its neighbouring industrial estate is metallic and smooty as fabrication yards owned by Kenchana HL and IMPSA churn out oil rigs and towering container cranes.
Across the Sungai Sitiawan from Kenchana HL’s wharf, the Universiti Kuala Lumpur has set up its own maritime engineering school.
Not far away is the famous Malayan Flour Mills “Ayam Dindings” chicken processing factory. A massive oil palm refinery, a few bio-diesel plants and some shipyards round out Perak’s bustling port.
Retired navy officer Poon Wee Ching explains that the Selat Dinding area is very strategic and was mapped out by the British navy in 1902. Lumut Port and its maritime industries along Sungai Sitiawan are protected from storms and the river is deep enough to handle cargo carriers and huge ships.
Though the professionals and skilled labourers provide a big and steady customer base for the properties and services of Sitiawan, their numbers are matched by the retirees from the RMN base.
“A good 40 per cent of navy personnel will settle in Lumut after they retire. After all, it’s a nice, quiet place,” says Poon.
Sam of DKLS Industries Berhad goes so far as to claim that Sitiawan’s population growth is helped by these retirees.
“It’s not like bases in other parts of the country where you retire and you return to your home town. These ex-Navy like the environment, so they stay, they don’t go back.
“When a new batch comes into the base, another one leaves. So every year our population goes up,” says Sam.
A reason to stay
The thing about those old uncles and aunties coming to invest their loads of hard cash is that it’s not just their money.
A bank officer explains that many of these folks would take out a loan once their children go to study or work in Singapore. The loan would be used to buy real estate, property or financial instruments. A portion of what their child makes would then service the loan.
“Which is why house prices in Sitiawan are higher than Ipoh,” says the banker with years of experience in the district.
It’s not just the money that’s being reinvested into the town. According to DKLS’s Sam, the heavy industries are attracting many locals with skilled shipyard experience in Singapore back home.
“They leave for Singapore as bachelors and when they return, they start families here. Which is why even with so many schools, enrolment and class sizes keep going up every year.”
That seems to be a crucial trait for any town or district which spurs development, stops people from leaving and prevents decay.
Besides the well-maintained roads, the industries, the hard-working locals, there is a collective sense that it is worth putting money back into Sitiawan and that it is worth staying.
That kind of pride of place is seen in how the locals gush at how Sitiawan is going to be “City A One”.

BE AWARE of liquid gel under steamed fish

Subject: BE AWARE of liquid gel under steamed fish
This can apply to other restaurants with similar practice.
Message from a friend.
Be careful when you eat steamed fish at the restaurants
Dear friends,
Just want to share a little bit of the sad story of my uncle in
Kuantan that happened in the Lemon Grass Thai Cuisine, next to the Grand City Hotel at Jalan Beserah, Kuantan, last Monday night at 8pm .
My uncle was having dinner with 2 of his friends, they ordered the
steam fish and the waiter/waitress put some liquid gel (not candles)
underneath the fish to heat up. This thing suddenly exploded and
caused my uncle to be injured in his ear, face, arm, and thank God that he was wearing glasses (or else he would have been blinded). The restaurant manager was not responsible enough even to visit my uncle since this accident happened. We'll have to try to find ways to help my Uncle to claim some compensation as he might not be able to work for at least 6 months.
I'm not trying to condemn the restaurant but just want you all to be
extra careful next time when ordering - steamed food - safer that they take away the "fire" below.
Regards,
Katherine

Can water be affected by our words?
Thailand Trip.. Must Read
Hi friends,
It is the year-end, which is one of the peak traveling periods for many Singaporeans. This is a true account that I would like to share as a cautionary tale. I have changed the names of people involved to protect their identities. Although it takes place on an overseas vacation, the warning applies equally whether abroad or at home. Jessie was in her early thirties and like many of us loved to travel and her last trip was to Thailand .
While visiting one of the tourist attractions in Thailand located near a temple, she decided to get a souvenir for herself. She walked along the shops with curious eyes. A well-dressed sales man managed to catch her attention. He asked her what year she was born.
She answered politely. He further pursued to ask her the month she was born. 'June,'she replied. As she answered, there was a sparkle in the man's eye. He quickly pulled
out an item and put it in Jessie's hand and she looked at it closely. It was a small-sculpted stone, but Jessie could not make out what the Item was. The man, with a serious tone told her that this small ornament was a very powerful item that could grant all her wishes, but she was not to tell anybody, not even her closest friends, boyfriend or parents that she had this ornament in her possession. He informed her to bring this item wherever she went and not to allow anybody to touch it. Jessie was thrilled and thought she had stumbled upon a great deal as the item seemed very precious. She asked for the price and paid for the item.
Vacations like always were too short and she returned to Singapore. On The day that she returned, she felt very exhausted as if the life was Draining out of her. She thought that it was due to the traveling and excitement and did not bother too much about it. She went to take a nap and as she rested, she started to feel an ache in her stomach that grew into a continuous sharp pain. By nightfall, the suffering was so intense that she went hysterical.
She crawled to the altar in her home and started to hit her head against the altar. Her parents were shocked with her actions. Her father held her tightly, to prevent her injuring herself while her mother called for an ambulance. Strangely enough, in the midst of all the pain and before she left with the ambulance, Jessie insisted that she had to bring along her handbag before leaving for the hospital. When she was sent to the! hospital, it was already dawn and she was sent for different tests and scans to determine the cause of her pain. The sharp pain persisted and even got more intense. Her Aunt Maggie heard the news that she was hospitalized and came to visit her. While Aunt Maggie was with her, Jessie thought about letting her employers know of her condition and hoped Aunt Maggie could contact them on her behalf. She took out her handbag and pulled out a pen to write the number on a piece of paper.
As she pulled out the pen, the small ornament, which Jessie had bought from Thailand , dropped on the floor. Aunt Maggie wanted to pick it up but Jessie stopped her. She said if Aunt Maggie were to touch it, she would have to have it cleansed while Jessie was not looking, Aunt Maggie quickly picked the ornament up and kept it. When Aunt Maggie was out in the hallway, she scrutinized it. The ornament sent shivers down her spine and she was very uncomfortable with the item so she decided to talk to Jessie's mother.
On the third day, the doctors informed Jessie's parents that they had confirmed that Jessie suffered from stomach cancer that had reached the terminal stage and they had to prepare for the worst. Jessie's parents were not able to understand this sudden diagnosis, as Jessie had not had any symptoms of stomach cancer. When Aunt Maggie went to the hospital and met with Jessie's mother, Jessie's mother broke the news to Aunt Maggie. Aunt Maggie was shocked and also shared her discovery of the ornament with Jessie's mother. Jessie's mother also had an uneasy feeling when she saw the ornament. She felt very lost and desperate about her daughter's situation. Jessie's mother and Aunt Maggie both knew of a medium; Master Lim and it struck both of them that he might shed some light as to the events.
Aunt Maggie quickly called to arrange to meet Master Lim. When they visited Master Lim, they showed the ornament to Master Lim. At one glance, he told them that Jessie's life had been swapped with that of another girl who was probably suffering from stomach cancer and was dying. The ornament was an object to hold black magic, which would suck the life out of Jessie Both Jessie's mother and Aunt Maggie queried whether there was anything that could be done. He replied that it was too late as the black magic cast was very powerful and the ornament had been discovered too late. The black Magic was targeted with certain criteria: The victim had to be a girl who was born in a specific year and month. The black magic would lose it’s power if Other people apart from Jessie touched it. However, in Jessie's case the black magic had already taken full effect and had become uncontrollable. Thus, only direct family members were to be allowed to visit her and even to send her off at her wake. The strange ornament was left at the temple to be handled and disposed of appropriately.
Silently, and with great pain, Jessie left by the seventh day on her return from her vacation.
Things to look out:
1. Usually you would not be instructed to keep it a secret about buying anything, unless magic is involved.
2. It is untrue that other people apart from the owner cannot touch blessed items. People that you are comfortable with can handle the blessed items. Of course, it is not a good idea to let strangers or anybody who you are not comfortable with to touch any of your closely held items.
3. It is quite common for people to ask what year you are born in when you are selecting items to suit your animal sign. If it is only to deal with Chinese animal signs, they do not need to ask for your birth month. If your birth month is requested for, you can always ask which theories they are following. For example, when selecting crystals and minerals according to astrology, we will need to know what is the birth month and day.
4. Do not buy closely held items or jewelry from non-creditable people, shops or organizations.
5. Many people may have the misconception that black magic can be cast on them if their eight characters (birth year, month, day and time) are known. Eight characters are not necessary to cast black magic on a specific person I have shared this true account as a caution to all that it is important to exercise care when buying items, especially closely held items. It is important to know whom you are buying from, where you are buying from and what you are buying. Do not take things too lightly; else there may be much to lose.
